HISTORY: In 1973 a group of artists formed the Gympie Art Society under the
Adult Education Scheme. Painters and Potters held weekly sessions in the
School of Arts Building, now the Cooloola Shire Public Gallery, then moved
under the CWA rooms and again under the Civic Centre.
An internal flood followed two years later by and external flood
gave us another move to suitable workspace at the Railway Institute Hall.
The Potters fromed their own group and now work at the Gympie and District
Historical Musem as a living exhibit.
Our name was changed to Gympie/Widgee Art Society to include members from
Gympie City and Widgee Shire. After amalgamation and Cooloola Shire was
formed, the Society was renamed but has always had the same aims as the founding group.
