Computer Technology And Art Combine
to Produce A new Kind of Vision!

Modern technology has always played a major role in the
development of art forms right through human history. It
has also impacted on the way an artist can project his/her
world and his/her interaction with it, to further that unique
vision, that is the result of the intermarriage between all
these combined elements that define any meaningful
artistic expression. The twentieth century in, particular,
has brought us an astounding array of technical wizardry
and advancements that could've never been dreamt of
before. Computers, of course, epitomise these technical
achievements with their applications reaching into the
very core of our lives, contributing new ways of thinking
and creating using novel artistic tools and media.

The only other significant tool, prior to computers, to influence visual arts so dramatically was, no doubt,
photography using the camera. Combine these two brilliant
inventions and you'll have an incredible tool to perceive,
render, or manipulate just about any image to crystallise
your own vision!

Enter Charlie Rohloff…

Honoured photographer and digital imaging artist. Armed
with his digital camera and scanner, Charlie uses them
with a computer not just to capture a scene digitally, but to
create a different kind of reality, his kind of reality.
A reality that strips its inhabitants of their identity and renders them as fleeting shadows captured in an urban
landscape that echoes the human condition and the current
uncertain environment of our so called modern times. This
is, also, evident in many of his pictures that portray other
eerie worlds or reflect humanity's fear and anxiety when
faced with scientific questions that could eventually seal
our fate.

The world through Charlie's lens doesn't remain a static
record of an event or a moment that was frozen in time, as
in traditional photography, but it is always dynamically
transferred to a visual statement that extends beyond the
obvious, to speak directly to the viewer in a fresh new
language that challenges the mind to ask and to interpret.

Surreal representation is utilized very successfully as well
here to emphasise his visual vocabulary and to bring such
messages across with a strong and very imaginative imagery that show his photographic and technical skill and
his ability to use an everyday and off the shelf hardware to
produce such startling works of art.

A brief biography will, perhaps complete the picture here.
Born in the USA, he migrated some 30 years ago to OZ.
Photography has always been one of his prime interests
right through his working life and when, as he jokingly
puts it, "received the golden hand-shake from his  employers"  he decided to turn his long beloved hobby
into a new career combining digital photography and
computer art, which was a fairly good decision as he has
found out. Continually honing his artistic skills, he
discovered newfound reserves of artistic energy and
creativity that kept him going to achieve the success that
he enjoys today. Charlie continues to live and practice his
art in Sydney, with many of his works being exhibited in
national and international art shows.
