The saga continues The ANG is a great national asset. Like it or not! It has a paramount role serving the Australian public as a cultural centre that houses lots of valuable Australian art works and many other important national heritage pieces, as well as being a two way channel for cultural exchange with other major international art galleries. No wonder the Australian public and the media have been expressing concern about who is appointed as the head of the Australian art at the gallery, a top curatorial position of major significance. First the gallery director has appointed, against all advice and criticism from his staff, artists, the press and others, a well known art critic only to see him resign a year later amid lot of controversial, negative and divisive talk. And while this critic's integrity, first rate literal ability and knowledge of the arts, have never been in any doubt, such appointment could have never been successful, simply because that kind of position requires a totally different type of skill and experience. Artists, art critics, arts editors or art publication managers, once thought to be of the most suitable to take charge of such public art institutions, have proven over and again to be the least suitable. So it is back to the drawing board for the director and hopefully the right name will be put forward to fill the position, but please remember this is our hard earned public money, so forget about high profiles and flamboyant styles and look for specific qualifications and relevant proven experience. It is only fair to demand that matters of such public importance to be given due diligence, it is OUR national gallery, and this is OUR public purse!! |
